Protein is needed to repair cells and tissue. Quality protein is needed to build complex immune system molecules, called nucleotides, and other specialized cell materials. Exercise and physical activity can break down muscle matrix fiber, and stimulate muscle growth, but no growth of any kind, muscle or otherwise, will take place without quality protein. A quality protein will contain all 20 or so amino acids, the 8 essential ones, plus the other 12 or 14 other so-called non-essential acids. A quality protein will have the essential and non-essentials in proper balance to achieve an excellent P.E.R. or protein efficiency ratio, or rating. There are quite a few protein formulas on the market today. However, the best protein supplement that I have used to date is whey (lactose free). Whey protein is highly digestible, mixes easily, and is a very efficient source of protein that promotes tissue growth and repair. Protein can be used as an occasional meal replacement or a between meals snack. I do not recommend substituting protein shakes in place of solid protein foods like fish, chicken, turkey, etc. (see chart). Two protein shakes a day is enough - no more. Another great source of protein is soy - Lee Haney's Soy Protein Powder Blend with Sweet Potato. Soy protein is proven to have staying power, above all, in the health industry. It has a variety of benefits. Soy is a total vegetarian source of protein that has many immune stimulating properties. In additional, soy is rich in other phyto-nutrients such as isoflavones that have a positive hormonal effect on humans, and are thought to be potent cancer fighting agents. Soy can be used as a great meal replacement by itself, or with fruit, and is never to replace anymore than one meal per day. Any one of Lee Haney's protein powders, or Lee Haney's nutritional bars would be an excellent choice to achieve your protein requirements. 1 lb.
