Staying Above the Yellow Line

If you are a client of mine, read my blog or receive my newsletters, you know that I am a fan of “The Biggest Loser,” NBC’s reality TV show about weight loss. So what you’re about to read is no secret, but if you’ve not been around me for very long, I wanted to enlighten you on the ups and downs of weight loss.

Since January of this year, the media has reported on a number of celebrities falling below the yellow line by gaining back pounds and pounds of previously lost weight.

Oh, sorry, if you don’t know what the yellow line is, it’s the measurement “The Biggest Loser” show uses to determine if a contestant is eligible for elimination that week. If they fall below, they could get the boot. So, each week, losing enough weight to stay, “above” the yellow line is imperative to their survival, on the show.

But, let’s relate that to real life…Losing weight is hard! I watch each week as not only the contestants, but my clients and hundreds of others struggle to stay above the line.

As Matt Hoover puts it in his heart-felt video, you have to work at it continually. Its an every day job. He goes on to say that when he was on the show, he didn’t have to worry about anything but losing weight. How hard is that when there are no kids to tend to, job to go to or coworkers, family, friends and antagonizers to contend with?

Even Kirstie Alley, who recently appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” apologized for regaining all her weight, plus 10 pounds. I’m sorry that she felt that she had to apologize. She is NOT the only one who has Yo-Yo’d and she won’t be the last!

What’s missing here is a dose of reality. These people are all real, they have lives and struggles and stressors and successes and failures and so do you. There is no magic pill, as proven by the recall of the overwhelmingly successful diet pill, hydroxycut.

The only proven way to lose weight AND keep it off is by committing to a program that combines the following necessary elements:

• A Nutritious diet
• Regular activity which includes strength training and cardiovascular exercise
• Positive lifestyle behavior

Now, if you go back to the videos and links that I have provided and really read them and listen to what they are saying, you will begin to understand that this whole process is part of a bigger picture. The picture is your life! How will you live it?

Look, I won’t promise you that it will be easy or a walk in the park…

…because you will work hard
…you will sweat
…and you’ll even be a little sore at times.

But I can promise you this, if you don’t take action and make getting healthy and staying that way a priority, you will wind up right back in the same position you are in right now.
