Get Motivated When You’re in a Slump #1

23 August 2010 4 Comments

One Goal. Whenever I’ve been in a slump, I’ve discovered that it’s often because I have too much going on in my life. I’m trying to do too much. And it saps my energy and motivation. It’s probably the most common mistake that people make: they try to take on too much, try to accomplish too many goals at once. You cannot maintain energy and focus (the two most important things in accomplishing a goal) if you are trying to do two or more goals at once. It’s not possible — I’ve tried it many times. You have to choose one goal, for now, and focus on it completely. I know, that’s hard. Still, I speak from experience. You can always do your other goals when you’ve accomplished your One Goal.

Great tips! It’s so true that too many goals at one time can bog you down. When I’m on overload all of a sudden it’s like the brakes go on and I do absolutely nothing instead of trying to do more. When that happens I know I have to retrench and focus on one task until I finish it, then move on to the next.

Carol…. were you looking over my shoulder earlier today?!?! As The Goal Diva, I understand more than anyone the power of focus. I’m always working on my top ten annual goals, which are then broken down into monthly goals, which are then broken down into weekly tasks. I’m headed out on vacation in another ten days, and suddenly my task list has become unrealistic. I know better. So today, I’ve taken a deep breath and refocused. I’ve determined my priorities and am working on them – one at a time.

I also tend to be someone who is going, going and this tip helped me to think about the ONE thing that I needed to accomplish, then go on to the next ONE thing and before you know it you have completed a lot!

Valerie, you and me both! I really believe in the power of thought and how you can use it to do whatever you really need to do. I feel that goals are thoughts on paper and if we don’t control them, they get out of hand very quickly.
