Obesity Tax”? How far will the Government go with your BM!??

10 August 2010 3 Comments

In the new regulations issued by the Obama Administration through the Department of Health and Human Services, your doctor must record not only the traditional measures of height and weight, but also YOUR Body Mass Index. What does this all mean? What will they do with this information and is it all bad? Tune in to hear what my panel of guests have to say about this situation.

Dr. David Blyweiss Dr. David Blyweiss practices functional medicine, which places a higher importance on the foods we eat and lifestyle choices we make being responsible for some of the conditions we suffer from (IBS, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.). He will point out the differences between weight and BMI and what each tells you about your personal health, plus what repercussions mandated recording might have.
Hood Simply Smart Milk Nutritionist Liz Ward, is passionate about health and fitness and has contributed to features on WebMD and the like. She will speak on BMI and your child
Jessica Setnick Jessica Setnick’s specialty area is eating disorders. Does anyone care that “obsessing about body weight is a symptom of an eating disorder, not to mention that studies show that many overweight people just avoid going to the doctor because they don’t want to get yelled at about their weight?” Find out why she feels that BMI was not meant to be used this way.

Well this is a tough one. I’m for smaller government. At the same time, it unfortunately seems it’s going to take a serious whack upside the head of some sort for overweight Americans to finally “get it.” If an “Obesity Tax” is what it will take for overweight Americans to finally slim down, I might be in favor of it.

I agree with you Valerie, its kind of hard to call now. My guests on the show and myself included think that relying solely on BMI as a measure to control weight and fat, and that BMI is an outdated measure that shouldn’t be used as they are proposing it. However, this may be the key to getting some people to do something and in that case, could be exactly what’s needed. We will definitely have to wait and see.

I wonder how many people will stay away from receiving routine medical checkups and treatment when they find out about this. That wouldn’t be a wise thing to do in the long run, because it allows time for more serious maladies to grow and become bigger problems than they would be if otherwise caught sooner. But I think it will be a deterent for some people.
