One Week, No Weight Off!
It’s frustrating to work so hard and not see the changes in your weight that you were looking for. So what’s the problem?
Actually, there could be several reasons, but the main one is probably that you aren’t eating enough calories. But Carol, didn’t you say that if you want to lose weight you have to eat less? Yes, I sure did. But (and this is a big BUT) every person (man or woman) is different. Therefore, every person has different caloric needs.
Your caloric needs are affected by several factors that make you unique:
• Height
• Weight
• Ethnicity
• Gender
• Age
• Body Fat
• Stress (both the type of stress in your life AND how you react to it)
• Genetics
All of the above factors must be taken into account when determining your unique daily caloric requirements. Plus, you have to factor in how much or how little activity you perform each day. It’s difficult to suggest an accurate caloric intake without knowing all the needed factors. However, as a general rule of thumb any amount lower than 1200 calories per day usually puts your body into starvation mode and causes you to store fat instead of burn fat.
Your body requires a specific balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat to function properly. That balance is determined by how your body converts these elements into fuel. How your body utilizes this fuel determines your daily caloric needs. See how simple that is?
So why doesn’t everyone follow this formula? Because it just “seems” too hard to follow. It really all boils down to calories in verses calories out. Take in more calories than you output and you gain weight. Expend or use more calories than you eat and you lose weight.
But (remember that “but from before?) if you eat way below what your body needs to function properly, which is determined by your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) then your body:
A. Goes into starvation mode
B. Your metabolism grinds to a screeching halt
C. And your body’s internal system begins to store fat and conserve energy instead of using excess body fat for energy
—Exactly what you DON’T want to happen!
Now, getting back to what we were discussing earlier, you not losing weight this week, here are the steps you need to take to ensure you are getting enough calories so your body can torch that excess fat and see your weight start to go down.
