Don't gain weight with Holiday eating

It’s party time, are you ready? Are you dreading the possible weight gain that might accompany all that partying? Don’t fret; I’ve outlined the 5 best strategies you can put into place now to keep from being a gainer this holiday season. Do read on.

1. Stay away from the buffet
All that food or rather all that temptation. It’s inevitable that at least a few of your stops will include buffet tables this year. Here are a couple ways to come out on top:
a. Use a smaller plate or even a saucer for your food. Visually, you won’t feel deprived or like you’re missing out.
b. Take small portions of all the foods you really want. You will get the taste without all the calories
c. Once you have your food, go far away. Don’t hang around that food-filled table; it’ll just start calling you to come back again and again.

2. Don’t resolve to lose weight on Jan. 2
If all you can think about is this “diet” that you’re going on at the beginning of the year, your mind will take on an all or nothing approach. You’ll be so consumed with eating foods you “can’t have” that you’ll lose perspective on how you really need to eat. Say no to diets on Jan. 2 and just enjoy the precious moments of this holiday season.

3. It’s not all about the food
Thinking about what you can and can’t eat at each place you attend will drive you nuts. Remember, you eat to live not live to eat. Think about the friends and family you’re going to enjoy and then take comfort in reconnecting. Treat the food you eat as the fuel you need to keep your body going.

4. Stay active
The best way to avoid weight gain is to keep your metabolism stoked so that your body is using calories for energy instead of storing them as fat. Be sure to include at least 30 minutes of aerobic-type activity in your schedule at least 5 days of the week. Try working out in the early morning. Not only will you burn more calories, but you’ll keep burning calories longer throughout the day.

5. Drink up!Watch the beverages you choose. Stick with water and tea and if you must drink alcohol, choose wine and drinks made with diet mixers. It may not be as sweet, but your body will thank you for not overdosing on all that sugar that normally accompanies mixed drinks. Plus alcohol is dehydrating and drinking water not only hydrates your body, it also helps to cleanse your body of waste products like excess body fat.
