What “Wife Swap” Taught Me About Weight Loss

13 October 2008 2 Comments

On the TV show “Wife Swap,” two women switch lives in order to input some wisdom from their own life onto the receiving family. Last week’s episode provided me with a valuable lesson about weight loss success.

As always, the women were from contrasting backgrounds. Wife A came from a family of power-lifters where everyone was involved, including the two kids. They even converted an abandoned school into a combination home and gym so they could be close to what they loved.

Wife B came from a family that promoted individuality and “alone time.” Wife A ran a Tea Party business teaching proper manners and etiquette to little girls. Her husband seemed to only tolerate the business and played no role at all in its operation. Her son only helped her because she paid him.

During the swap, Wife A decided to make Wife B’s family realize how important the Tea Party business was to her and had the husband actually run one of the parties himself. He came away with a renewed sense of purpose.

Meanwhile, Wife A’s family also saw how Wife B loved what she did and decided to show her support by actually throwing her a surprise tea party. She was overjoyed that someone, even strangers, would care enough about what she did to give her this gift.

So what’s this who got to do with weight loss?
Well, it’s really about the support that was shown to one person for the efforts they put forth.

Imagine how awesome Wife B felt when she realized that someone was taking an interest in what she was passionate about. And how she felt when she returned home to find out that now even her family was supporting her venture. Great, right?

Renewed, Determined, Motivated and Accomplished, are just a few of the words that described how Wife B must have felt. And you can feel it to. You don’t have to go on this journey to a healthy life alone.

It’s all about your support system. Your friend, spouse or loved one can be there for you to help you push forward and achieve success. However, if you don’t have someone or the ones around you aren’t acting as you need them to, don’t give up. Go elsewhere for support.

Find the support you need
Join a local support group for weight loss or go online. Fitness Magazine has an excellent workout buddy finder system. Why not invite your co-workers to get in on this journey with you?

Don’t give up and don’t stop, find someone who understands the journey you’re on and will help you to reach the end. Remember, its your life and finding a good support system can make the journey not only fun but doable and successful.

I found this reference doing a search of our episode. It was really ironic that you used our episode to address the importance of support. I have always told people that come to the gym…regardless to what your goals, you need positive support. Find people who will encourage you and support you. It is sad to hear people say that someone they care about will say such negative things as “you will never stick with it” or “you are wasting your time”….Get around positive people. Everyone needs support and the people that really care about you will be there for you (as they should be).
