Don’t Lose Weight…Until You are Ready
Everyday, millions of Americans go on diets and everyday, equally as many abandon their diets and weightloss programs because they just couldn’t continue.
Why does this happen? You started with the right intent, the determination and the will to succeed, but along the way, you fizzled. You just weren’t really ready and prepared.
I know that this sounds kinda funny coming from someone who makes their living from women wanting to lose weight. But if you aren’t ready to lose weight, I mean really ready, don’t start that diet or weight loss program.
You have to get prepared both mentally and physically to lose weight before you ever begin a program. Believe me, no one that has ever successfully completed a weight loss program, competed in any fitness, figure or bodybuilding contest or played sports that emphasized “making weight,” ever began the process without being prepared. Being prepared means setting certain things in motion and putting other processes in place right from the start so that you guarantee your success. If you don’t do this, you are destined to fail.
Here are some simple steps you can put in place to make your journey as successful as it can be.
Realize that progress takes time
First, start thinking realistically. Real, long-lasting weight loss takes time. If you lose weight fast, it will come back faster. It took you some time to put the weight on, so it will take some time to take the weight off. A healthy weight loss is ½ to 2 lbs per week. This pace will ensure that you are shedding body fat and not precious muscle or plain old water weight.
De-Junk your kitchen
Clean out the fridge and cupboards. Get rid of foods containing refined, processed sugars and high fat. Stock up on whole foods including fruits, vegetables and whole grains. They will keep you feeling full longer and help to stop the sugar cravings.
Get the right clothing and shoes
Take time to get comfortable shirts, shorts and sweats, that allow you to move as much as you need. Go to an athletic apparel store and get fitted with the right shoes. The best are cushioned cross trainers that are wide enough to support you as you exercise. Wear cushioned socks for greater support and comfort. You don’t have to spend a fortune, Walmart and other discount stores stock a variety of workout clothing.
Make a plan and stick to it
Schedule time to grocery shop so that you are never short on the foods you need. Put your exercise gear out so you’re always ready to get active. Write your workouts in your daily planner. When you actually write them down, there is more of a chance that you will actually do them.
Journal each day
Write down everything that you eat, how much exercise you’re doing and any changes in your body measurements. Journal your feelings about achievements as well as challenges.
Get a support system going
Find one or more people you trust to help support you and perhaps join you in your quest for a healthier lifestyle. If you can’t find someone in your day-to-day life, go online. There are lots of websites that list other people looking to pair up for success. Pets make great walking partners and they need exercise also.
No obstacles, no success
One of the most important things to expect is that there will be obstacles along the way to achieving your goals. Instead of praying that they don’t show up, expect them and then practice stress resilient behavior by learning how to navigate around them. Obstacles can include anything from a sabotaging spouse to a pulled ligament or broken treadmill. Learn how to regroup and shift from Plan A to Plan B when life gets stressful. The key is not to allow stress to halt your healthy lifestyle program. Use it to hone your stress shedding skills.
